I am constanly receiving questions about performance upgrades for the PowerStroke. It seems like once people have seen what this engine is capable of, they want even more. So, I've given in--you want performance upgrades, I can get them for you. Keep in mind that chips and transmission controllers have the potential of causing the "Check Engine" light to come on, and should be removed prior to any diagnostic attempts. Intercoolers and turbine upgrades can skew sensor readings and cover up problems with the factory systems. These upgrades are ment to increase base performance and not regain lost power, except in cases where power has decreased as a result of on board computer module "updates". Performance concerns should be diagnosed and any problems corrected before upgrades are performed.

Any aftermarket devises which you may install will not void your warrenty. However, if any problems arise from, or can be attributed to the installation of such a devise, the repair will not be covered by the vehicle manufacturer's warrenty. See the manufacturer and/or the installer of the devise for reimbursment.

CHIPS, PROGRAMMERS & MODULES

Chips enhance performance by altering the program installed in the vehicle's computer.
Chips cannot correct a lack of power concern, but can
restore power lost due to larger tires or computer update/reprogram.
Computer calibration code required to assure correct application.

Programmers plug into the diagnostic connector under the dash and load
an enhanced performance program into your engine computer.
The vehicle's stock program is retained in the programmer,
then the programmer is disconnected and stored until the stock
program needs to be restored, or the performance program changed.

Modules are electronic boxes that are plugged into the computer
or the engine sensor harness.

Evolution Programmer for 7.3
The Evolution Programmer plugs into the diagnostic connector under the dash
and allows you to install your choice of three performance programs: Tow--60 HP/145 ft-lbs torque; Race--80 HP/180 ft-lbs;
Extreme--100 HP/255 ft-lbs*
Also reads and clears diagnostic codes and provides 0-60 and quarter mile times.

The Edge Juice is a plug in module with a dash mounted switch that allows you to choose between

Attitude Monitor
The Attitude Monitor expands the Edge Juice to give more control of the performance increases.
Allows for stock, 15, 40, 60, 80, and 115 HP settings,
max pyrometer (EGT) temperature, low boost fuel control,
and fuel control at transmission shifts.
The LCD displays exhaust temperature, boost, RPM and fuel cutback %.

Diablo Predator Programmer

The Predator programmer gives you a choice of three performance programs:
40, 60 and 100 HP for 7.3 and 45, 65 and 100HP for 6.0.
Programming is done through the diagnostic connector under the dash.
The Predator can also be used to read and clear codes and watch sensor data.

It is recommended that a pyrometer be installed to monitor exhaust gas temperature
and a transmission fluid temperature gauge installed on trucks with automatics
to avoid damage to the engine, turbo and transmission.

Larger exhausts can increase performance by as much as 35 HP,
improve economy and throttle response by reducing backpressure
allowing the turbo to spin up faster, and can lower exhaust temperatures by as much as 200°.

GAUGES

Pyrometers
Pyrometers are exhaust temperature indicating gauges. As load increases, so does fuel delivery which, in turn, increases heat. A pyrometer allows you to monitor exaust gas temperature (EGT) and back out of the throttle if they are too high, or pull over to prevent engine and turbocharger damage. Turbo damage can also result if the engine is shut of when EGT are too high. To be most accurate the thermocouple (pyrometer probe) should be installed within two inches of the exhaust manifold. To prevent turbo damage a high temperature Inconel tip should be used when installed pre-turbo. If the thermocouple is installed after the turbo the reading will be approximately 200 degrees lower than at the manifolds. Threaded and clamp-on thermocouples are available.
Threaded probes require a welded bushing or tapped hole.

Manifold Pressure Gauges
Also called "Boost" gauges, these allow you to monitor turbo performance.

Transmission Fluid Temperature
When towing or if performance upgrades have been installed, automatic tranmission fluid temperatures
can rise to dangerous levels. Overheating is the primary cause of transmission failures.
Monitoring the temperature of the ATF can help prevent costly repairs.
